Abhiruchi Sports Day is celebrated in Assam on September 3 every year to honor the birthday of Bhogeswar Baruah, an Arjuna awardee sprinter and sporting icon. Baruah won a gold medal in the 800m race at the 1966 Bangkok Asian Games. In the early 1990s, he also started a sports academy in Dimow, Sivasagar, but closed it down after three years due to lack of funds.
